Discovering Voice: A Consequence of the Collective

Throughout the course of my artistic journey, I continually find myself drawn to the world and culture of live figure drawing. An intense and creative aura, amplified by other artists of varying rituals and backgrounds. We gather to observe the model, intent on interpreting their form and energy onto the page. I sometimes find myself brought into a trance during it all. Playing into this energetic space, letting my creative instincts take over and translate what I see and feel through my hands and onto paper. Likely the closest I have ever been to actual meditation.

It is in these spaces that I have found significant artistic growth. These sessions are where I learned and practiced anatomy, then learned to work quickly and with purpose, and eventually found my style and visual “voice”. It was during my time at NUNU Arts and Culture Collective where I discovered my current voice. As the artist in residence from the fall through spring (‘24-‘25) and frequent participant in the weekly drawing sessions held there, I found myself within a community of mentors and peers. Many hands guiding me towards the pursuit of creative and personal expression. 

“Discovering Voice: A Consequence of the Collective” is ultimately my love letter to the art of the figure drawing session, and to my time at NUNU Arts and Culture Collective. As the origin point of my current voice and process, many of the pieces are from the sessions at NUNU and informed by the artists around me there. Had it not been for that serendipitous experience, I don’t believe I would be where I am now. Both as a person and an artist. The pieces included reflect the outcome of that experience, and the hosting of the show being held at NUNU could not be more fitting for such a theme.
